Biography
(1887 Madrid — 1927 Boulogne s/S.)
Gris moved to Paris in 1906, to Rue Ravignon, into «Le Bateau Lavoir», where Picasso also lived. Through Picasso he got to know Georges Braque. In 1911 he painted his first cubist—oriented oils. Gris' works made an impression at the 1912 Salon des Indépendants and Kahnweiler took him under contract. Rupf was among the first people to buy works by Gris at the Galerie Kahnweiler. In 1913 he moved with his wife Josette to Céret (Languedoc), where Picasso and Manolo, among others, frequently visited them. In 1915 Kahnweiler had to release Gris from the contract obligations as he was no longer able to support him; Gris entered into new negotiations with the Parisian gallery owner Léonce Rosenberg. Between 1921—1924 Gris designed several stage sets for the Russian choreographer Diaghilev. Gris and his wife lived in Boulogne–sur–Seine from then on until Juan's untimely death in 1927. In Kahnweiler's view Gris was one of the four great Cubists («les quatres cubes») along with Picasso, Braque and Fernand Léger.
